Too Close to Shore
Copyright Greg Sutton Music 2003

Never to go outside my door
Never to do what I haven’t done before
I won’t ask for more from me
Never to fall down flat on my face
Never to do a thing but just waste the space
That I’ve let my body find

People tell me fools rush in
But I’m standing in
The same place as yesterday
Good will come to those who wait
But it’s getting late
And my time is running out

Never to go outside my door
Never to do what I haven’t done before
I won’t ask for more from me
Never to fall down flat on my face
Never to change the human race
I find that I’ve lost the time I had

This is not living
It’s swimming too close to the shore

I love living on the edge
But my ledge is only
Two feet above the ground
Is that me up on the stage
It’s so strange to see
What I’ll probably never be

This is not living
It’s swimming too close to the shore

Never to take more than I need
Never to work my hands till they bleed
For me, what you get you’ll never see
Never to squeeze a little bit more
Never to find the things that I’m looking for
Open doors that shut for me

This is not living
It’s swimming too close to the shore

Never to go outside my door
Never to do what I haven’t done before
I won’t ask for more from me
Never to fall down flat on my face
Never to change the human race
I find that I’ve lost the time I had

Never to speed or go to fast
Never for fear of busting my ass
The same, nothing ventured nothing gained
Never be brave for being afraid
Never to go for wanting to stay right here
Where I’m safe with all my fear
Never to jump out of a plane
Never to hear “hey man, your insane”
But I knew that I can’t fly this thing

This is not living
It’s swimming too close to the shore

Nothing Matters

Beyond be still,
Beyond longing for
Scenes to re-play scenes
We’ve played against my will
All of the answers
To questions that you’ve found
Inside your head
Still I long for the end of time
When your mind
Has reached the end of mine

Beyond the place
I left my fears
I’ve still been left beyond,
My mind is clear
Do you remember
What I’ve been remembered for?
A look on my face longing to say
“Life is: my head belongs to you”

Beyond the place
Where I’ve been gone
I hope that I fooled everyone

Nothing matters,
Nothing matters to me but you,
To me nothing matters but you

Be good to me I’ll be good to you
To justify what we’ve been through
Beyond the way that we’ve become
Beyond the place I’m standing on

Nothing matters,
Nothing matters to me but you,
To me nothing matters but you

You and I

We are both so blind
Different attitudes
Anger seems to rule our lives
Things that I must do
You and I won’t take the time
That you and I should share
Because we deny our love
As if we didn’t care

But I see things in a photograph
on the wall actions speak
Louder than words to me
I wish someone would spell out
Which way to go because
I don’t know, I don’t know

You and I forever
You and I won’t see
You and I will live out
What’s ahead of me
You and I will live up
You and I won’t leave
You and I won’t give up
On me

Empty rooms of consequence
Memories fill my mind
I try and re-live those situations
That I’ve left behind
You and I won’t think about
The promise that we’ve made
Is all this fighting worth more than
The love we need to save?

And when I’ve run out of time for sure
And I look back and see
What I could have done different
But it won’t matter to me
Because the more I wish for
The less I see that what I needed
Was what I had in the first place
I just needed someone to remind me

You and I forever
You and I won’t see
You and I together
You and I for me
You and I will live up
You and I won’t scream
You and I forever
In-spite of me

You and I forever
You and I we need
You and I together
You and I for me
You and I won’t give up
You and I we need
You and I will live out
What’s ahead of me

You and I will make up
You and I won’t see
You and I won’t freak out
You and I won’t scream
You and I together
You and I will be
You and I forever
In-spite of me

Airwaves

Bad is good, good is bad
Exploit all of the talent
You never had
I’ve got something to say
When the sound adheres my words
Just wear your flannel and play
And the crowd will listen

I’m waiting to hear the sound
Of my head across the airwaves
Instead of their song
I’m standing between what rhymes
But my hears don’t hear it that way
Instead, what went wrong

You can’t play, you can’t sing
But we know good music and talent
Don’t mean anything
Just do what I say
In your mind’s eye you’re a cliché
And then when you fade away
You can hear me laughing

I’m standing between what rhymes
But my hears don’t hear it that way
Instead, what went wrong
I’m waiting to hear the sound
Of my head across the airwaves
Instead of their song

I’m waiting to hear the sound
Of my head across the airwaves
Instead of their song
I’m standing between what rhymes
But my hears don’t hear it that way
I think that I played way too long
I’m waiting to hear, to hear what
I know I think, I’m waiting to
Hear my own song, what went wrong?

Give to me,
Give to me she said
Before, before I’m dead
Prey for me,
Prey for me she said

My fathers gone,
I have no one who
Believes in me,
It’s just us three
And the sky is gray,
Explains the way
It feels to be me
And I won’t understand
Why my life began
And clearly I can see
There is no point to me

Someone explain what
I have to gain by living
It’s so easy to,
From your point of view
Walk in my shoes

Send to me a prayer
It’s time to go,
but I don’t know where
Wake me up,
Wake me up from this

This nightmare,
I’m running scared
They’re after me,
This bad disease they call
Poverty, it comes to me
Without warning us

And it’s so meaningless,
What you call happiness
Try on my shoes,
From my point of view
It’s not up to me to choose
But someone has to lose,
It’s whose in my shoes
Shoes, try ‘em on

The Fall
Copyright Greg Sutton Music 2003

It’s just a dream,
It’s just a glass of air
A lie believed,
A train that goes nowhere
Killing time,
To be born and then to die
Well I believe,
I don’t believe this lie

And then I see
my shadow standing tall,
Is this the rise before
The fall, I can see
It’s only me, what will
Or will not be

I’m in a room
That hides a world of truth,
It’s hard to find
The door I left behind,
All recall, and all here
Is quickly gone,
Well I believe,
I don’t believe this lie

It’s been ten years to see
My rise and fall,
Is this the end or just
My curtain call, I can see
It’s only me, what will
Or will not be

When I dreaming and I’m falling,
I never hit the ground
Every time I have dreams and I fall,
I never hit the ground
When I’m dreaming and I fall,
I never hit the ground
When I dream, and I fall
I keep falling and I never hit the ground
I wake up before I hit the ground

And then I see
my shadow standing tall,
Is this the rise before
The fall, I can see
It’s only me, what will
Or will not be

Somewhere In Time

Sometimes I see,
Sometimes how
different it should be
for you and me
Sometimes she cries,
and other times she
turns to ask me, why
are you leaving?
There is so much to do
And I’ve got to change
the world for us
It won’t change by itself
Your too young to ask
for understanding
But I want to be
someone worth having
You know I want to be there

Somewhere in time,
Somewhere I’ll never walk away
With you I will stay
Somewhere I see
Somewhere your waiting there for me
And I will never leave you

She hears me say
There’s never enough
hours in a day
There is somewhere
I have to be
Can you save some
attention for me?
I’m short of affection
I need you to
make your connection
Before it’s too late
We can never relive
all the time we’ve lost
Sharing a world that
you will find
I’ll show you how
when you ask why
Through the fence I can
See from my prison
All these dreams that
I keep in vision
All the time I can’t steal

Somewhere in time,
Somewhere I’ll never walk away
With you I will stay
Somewhere I see
Somewhere your waiting there for me
And I will never leave you

It takes some time
to find yourself
But it may cost
you someone else
I know how you feel

Somewhere in time,
Somewhere I’ll never walk away
With you I will stay
Somewhere I’ll see
Somewhere she’s waiting there for me
I will never leave
I will never leave
I would never leave you

Somewhere in time,
Somewhere I’ll never walk away
With you I will stay
Somewhere I’ll see
Somewhere she’s waiting there for me
I will never leave
I would never leave
I will never leave you
